Water Sonnet, by Alexander Best

September 29, 2009

My love & I go down to the well100_2136
With buckets at our waists,
& dip the vessels in, refresh ourselves,
then we give chase…

The sparkling drench is ours,
Extravagance of simple choice.
We swallow all, & surge & runneth o’er
By such device.

& liquid Time a-rushing flows
& tolls the bell for me,
& you – where did our children go?
Could we abandoned be?

My love & I drove to the well
& turned our buckets over,
Sat down upon them, sighed
& waited – waited, sighed –
Forever.
